Why this matters to Alberta game development

Edmonton-based Caldera Interactive demonstrates a pathway from local game-development education to establishing an independent studio. Co-founders Isael Huard, Mickael Zerihoun and Titus Lo met through the University of Alberta’s game development certificate program before forming the studio and eventually moving into full-time development. Its first commercial game, The Rabbit Haul, combines farming, tower defence and roguelite mechanics and has attracted recognition beyond Alberta, including winning a pitch competition at the 2024 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. The project has also received support from the Canada Media Fund, allowing the small Edmonton team to advance from prototyping into full production. Caldera’s development illustrates how Alberta’s post-secondary programs, federal game funding and international industry events can help locally formed teams progress from student developers to studios producing original intellectual property for a global market.
